Lake Cherokee DDR German Shepherds
Breeding the Deutsche Demokratische Republik German Shepherd
Over the years, I have owned many breeds of guardian/security working dogs; German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Belgian Malenois, and Anatolian Shepherds. I have always favored the strong, devoted type of breed that one can both call a family companion and a family guardian. Thirty years ago I owned what I considered to be the ideal dog, a German Shepherd. This noble breed symbolized everything I wanted in a companion animal. |

However, the massive popularity of the German Shepherd created too many improper breeding programs which magnified the genetic faults inherent to the breed. Also, the classic look of the German Shepherd dog had shifted more towards a “Show Dog” type with an extreme angulation to its look, and less of the strong, powerful, traditional look of the earlier generations. This angulation which is so desired in the “Show Ring” also contributed to the breed’s genetic health issues. |
In my continuing research on dogs, I found an article on the German Shepherd dogs from the former country of East Germany, known as the German Democratic Republic, or as they called it then the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR). The history of these dogs, and how they were bred to be the finest and purest of their breed struck me with awe.

I still remember when the former East Germany, along with the Soviet Union, would dominate the Olympic Games with their swimmers, weight lifters, and many other athletes. The knowledge that East Germany had done the same with the German Shepherd dog fascinated me. They bred their dogs not to be an angulated “Show Dog,” but for actual security and military purposes.

The gene pool lines were kept pure, with no infringing from outside influences. The desired type emulated what the original German Shepherd looked like in those old, grainy, historic photographs. A strong solid sinewy body, with a large blocky head, darker in pigmentation, and with a lean muscularity. Their breeding program weeded out any genetic issues such as Hip Dysplasia.

If a dog was not a perfect specimen it was not put through the East German government’s breeding program. The end result was a German Shepherd that was used by the government for military and civilian use. Infamously, they were used to patrol the Berlin Wall, and to keep freedom out. I was so impressed with the DDR German Shepherd that I purchased a few of these dogs with 100% DDR gene lines.

Our intent at Lake Cherokee DDR German Shepherds is to pursue the pure lineage of these dogs and institute a very selective, limited breeding program 2-3 times a year.
If you are interested in purchasing a puppy that will be everything you have always wanted in a family guardian, then it would behoove you to consider a DDR German Shepherd from Lake Cherokee DDR German Shepherds. If you have been considering a German Shepherd more like the old school, classic type then you need look no further.
These DDR dogs were bred to be the “Best of the Best,” and we will strive to maintain their heritage. We encourage members of the military, police, search and rescue, or any civilian departments, which utilize specialized dogs to make inquiries about our puppies. A recent USA Today article wrote about how the federal government is purchasing foreign bred dogs for upwards of $4,500 per dog because of the scarcity of quality dogs available in the United States. This is the same reason I have chosen the DDR German Shepherd. We are not a kennel, our dogs sell for a lot less than what was reported in the USA Today article. A lot less.
Our intent is to pursue the continuation of this incredible line, and place each puppy in as close to an ideal home as is humanly possible. Money is secondary. These DDR German Shepherds are not for everyone, and we will not sell them to just anyone. They are not meant to be raised as an attack or fighting animal. They are not meant to be tied to a tree to guard a perimeter, nor to be enclosed in a 4x6 kennel for the rest of their lives. These dogs are for someone who is looking for a family companion and family guardian. Our dogs are raised with other dogs, cats, and young children from birth. Their breeding and intelligence will identify who is family and who is not instinctively. They are not kept in dog kennels, but from a young age are allowed to roam a 3 acre fenced property for full development of their muscular and skeletal body.
They are treated with heartworm, tick and flea medication year round. They are fed a diet of Natura dog foods, 'The Healthiest Pet Food in the World,' which is free from any types of additives, preservatives, hormones, corn, or diluted with lower quality glutens or soy proteins. All Lake Cherokee DDR German Shepherd pups are examined by our D.V.M. and receive a health certificate prior to placement. Please take the time to navigate through our web site, and learn more about the DDR German Shepherds that we are exclusively breeding at Lake Cherokee DDR German Shepherds. Hopefully, you will find out the same thing that we did; there is no finer German Shepherd specimen than a DDR German Shepherd.
